So, you’ve just gotten engaged! Congrats! Perhaps you’re interested in having engagement photos taken! There are several things to think about, some of which you may not have considered. Let’s start with WHY an engagement session is such a valuable experience.
You will get the chance to get to know your photographer and how they photograph. Often, couples are nervous about having their photos taken, especially for the entire wedding day. An engagement session will introduce you to being photographed together, many times it’ll be by the photographer you have booked for your wedding. You’ll learn some basic, flattering poses, and how to relax in front of the camera and enjoy the moment. Also, your photographer can gauge your comfort level, and see what types of poses and overall photographs are best for you. You’ll also be introduced to working closely with a photographer. Again, you’ll be photographed over the course of your wedding day, so your engagement session will help form a connection with them.
The point above hinted at the opportunity to use the engagement session as “wedding day photography practice.” For the most part, this is true! Besides becoming comfortable and learning what poses you like and work best for you, you also have other opportunities. If you have the chance, why not have your wedding hair and makeup trials if you’re hiring professionals for your wedding day? This isn’t for everyone, but it’s an option!
You can use the session to bond with your soulmate. Why not use an engagement session as part of a date or night out? Engagement sessions are NOT stiff, formal photo shoots – they can be fun, lighthearted, and even silly! I love engagement sessions because I get to see how the couple interacts with each other. I also love when the location is meaningful to the couple, and we can all enjoy the experience together.
You will get photos! AND! These photos can be used for many things! Of course nowadays, many people love sharing their lives online on social media. That’s great! However, the engagement session photos can be used in many other ways, too. You can use a photo for your Save the Dates. You can use them for personalized favors for your wedding guests. You can play a slideshow during your reception. You can also have a photographic guest sign in book for your reception. You can even simply display your favorites in your home.
In my next post, I will share some tips to help you prepare for your engagement session!
